ASML Considers Price Hike for Low-NA EUV Lithography Tools

ASML, the world’s leading supplier of advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, is evaluating a price increase for its Low-NA EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography tools. This potential move, revealed in the company’s second quarter financial results, has reportedly caused concern among major customers in the semiconductor industry.

Aligning Pricing with Product Value

According to ASML’s Chief Financial Officer, Roger Dassen, the company is exploring value-based pricing for its Low-NA EUV systems. Dassen emphasized that as ASML continues to enhance the productivity and capabilities of its lithography tools, pricing adjustments are being considered to reflect the increased value delivered to customers.

“We keep on increasing the productivity of the Low-NA tool. That gives us a strong runway for potential price improvements going forward,” Dassen stated. He further explained that value-based pricing is central to ASML’s strategy, especially as the benefits to customers grow in the current market environment.

Productivity Gains Driven by Software Innovations

Much of the recent performance improvement in ASML’s EUV machines has come from advancements in the software that operates these complex systems. The company’s Installed Base Management business unit plays a key role in maintaining and upgrading existing machines, ensuring customers can maximize the value of their investments.

ASML’s Low-NA EUV portfolio includes the TWINSCAN NXE:3800E, designed for manufacturing at the 2 nm node, the TWINSCAN NXE:3600D for 3 nm and 5 nm nodes, and the TWINSCAN NXE:3400C for 5 nm and 7 nm nodes. These tools are now considered mature technologies within the industry.

Impact on Semiconductor Manufacturers

While current orders for Low-NA EUV scanners are locked in at previously agreed prices, ASML plans to implement new pricing for these systems starting in 2028. This announcement has reportedly drawn criticism from major customers, including TSMC, Taiwan’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. Despite the pushback, industry experts note that ASML’s unique position as the sole supplier of advanced EUV scanners leaves customers with limited alternatives.

As the semiconductor industry continues to push the boundaries of chip manufacturing, ASML’s pricing strategy for its cutting-edge lithography tools will remain a focal point for chipmakers worldwide.
